Geekymint is a conversation on the topic of anime and manga. Discussing favorite characters, genres, and artists! This week we discuss top black male & female character from an anime or manga series! Who are your favorites?
There are so many different types of anime shows that it’s hard to narrow down the list. But for this article, we at Geekymint have decided to stick with black characters only in order not to be biased or overly generalize our analysis too much. We hope you enjoy reading about these amazing people and please feel free to share your own favorite black characters!
The “anime with black characters” is a genre of Japanese animation that has had some of the best black anime characters ever created. Here are some of the best both male and female.
Anime hasn’t backed down when it comes to diversity and representation. Multiple black anime characters have captured the show and our hearts throughout the history of anime, sometimes even more than the protagonists. These characters are shown as powerful, stylish, and amusing.
In a conservative country like Japan, where racial prejudice is still prevalent, racial representation in anime is a huge step forward. This is particularly true for black people, who have long been victims of racism and racial segregation.
Take a look at some of these black anime characters that have not only captured the interest of the audience, but have also carried the show on their shoulders at times. These figures have been honored, and they serve as a powerful reminder that every individual, regardless of skin color, is as valued.
The top 7 most powerful black characters in anime
Naruto Shippuden’s Killer B
In the masterpiece anime Naruto Shippuden, he is perhaps one of the most well-known and famous male black anime characters. He is also known as the Jinchuriki of the Eight Tales and is one of Naruto’s most powerful and skillful ninjas. B, a Kumogakure native, has repeatedly shown remarkable combat abilities and swordsmanship, as well as mastery over his Tailed Beast and the ability to assess a situation and formulate plans during a battle.
B is not only one of the strongest, but he is also funny and weird in a nice manner. If you’re a fan of Naruto, you can’t deny that his great freestyle and ability to come up with lyrics at any moment and in any place made you feel good!
Bleach’s Aikawa is one of my favorite characters.
Love Aikawa, although being a minor character that debuted late in the story, has to be one of the series’ most powerful Visoreds. He demonstrates great combat and swordsmanship abilities. He has a wicked sense of style and yields Tengumaru, his Zanpakuto. He has spiky afro-styled hair and wears a green jogging suit with mirrored sunglasses.
He’s also a highly relatable character, since he spends much of his time lounging about and reading manga (remind you of anyone?). He also has a habit of spoiling a plot by describing conversations and offering his own interpretation of what the character meant in a dramatic and hard-boiled style.
During combat, though, he can become quite serious and displays a lot of concern and sympathy for his comrades. When it comes to cutting down his adversaries, he may be cruel and cold, but when it comes to messing about with his buddies, he can be carefree and cheerful.
Bleach’s Kaname Tosen
The former Captain of the Gotei 13’s 9th Division is a long-time fan favorite. Despite his sight impairment, his combat skills and marking talents outshine the competition. He is immensely strong and wields the Suzumushi sword, which can kill anybody with a single hit.
Kaname Tosen, while becoming one of the series’ villains towards the end, was a seeker of justice who sincerely cared about the people he loved. Perhaps this is why he did the things he did, which ultimately led to his demise.
During his service as the leader of the 9th Division, Captain Tosen was also well-liked by his subordinates. His Lieutenant, Shuhei Hisagi, whom he once rescued and subsequently mentored, idolized and worshiped him in particular. And, let’s face it, we all fawned over this hulking black cartoon character and sobbed along with him as he narrated his tale.
Female black anime characters that are the best
Bleach’s Yoruichi Shihoin
When it comes to powerful black representation, Bleach takes the cake. It also presents strong female characters well. Apart from Tier Harribel, Yoruichi is possibly the most iconic female black anime character in the series.
Yoruichi is a terrific fighter and overall character, and is one of the most ferocious characters in the series. She is from one of the Soul Society’s Four Noble Families, and she shows off her abilities by becoming the clan’s leader, Captain of the Gotei 13’s 2nd Division (now extinct), and Supreme Commander of the Onmitsukido (now former). Her abilities on the battlefield in terms of physical strength are impressive. Her extraordinary speed and attitude in doing the Flash Step earned her the moniker of Flash Goddess. Soi Feng and Byakuya Kuchiki, two of the greatest in the field, were taught by her!
While conversing with Keisuke Urahara and Ichigo and friends in the human world, Yoruichi possessed the power to transform into a talking cat. She also has the filthiest sense of humour and is one of Bleach’s most popular characters, with whom we all fell in love.
Hunter X Hunter’s Canary
This ferocious adolescent may have a baby face, but don’t let that fool you! Because if you mess with her, she may shatter a bone or two in your body.
She is the Zoldyck Family’s trainee butler, and she will take on anybody who tries to trespass on the Zoldyck estate. If you come across her, escape for your life because she would not hesitate to eject you by force! This is shown when she is just ten years old and takes down a trespasser and his 100 accomplices.
Despite her youth, she is a formidable opponent, and her talents have won her the role of butler and guardian of the Zoldyck family. We’ve got our fingers crossed for her.
Cowboy Bebop’s Jet Black
Jet Black is a colorful anime character that appears in Cowboy Bebop, one of the most popular anime series of all time. He was a member of the ISSP before becoming a bounty hunter. He is also the captain of Bebop, and throughout the series, he is a pleasant and intriguing figure.
He is the most feared and respected bounty hunter in the galaxy, and is noted for his powerful build and cybernetic prosthetic left arm. When he hooks up with Spike, Faye, and Edward, he exhibits a surprising shift in demeanor, behaving all mellow and nice.
Given his life experiences, he is incredibly intelligent and sometimes provides critical advise to his friends. He is also well-liked by his classmates and serves as a father figure to all of Bebop’s residents.
Tenjou Tenge’s Bob Makihara
This anime character is from South Africa and has African ancestors. Because of this, he is referred to as “the foreigner” by the Japanese, who are exceedingly traditional and view outsiders, or “gaijins,” with suspicion. However, he is shown as having blue eyes and a Japanese surname, while it is unclear whether or not his genuine surname is African.
He is a member of the Juken Club and is one of the anime’s strongest characters. He is a gifted fighter with excellent instincts who can take on practically anybody in a fight.
You may watch anime with a black protagonist.
There are innumerable anime featuring a black lead that you can watch in subtitled and dubbed versions on any anime streaming site. Afro Samurai (which is also a samurai anime), Mitchiko and Hatchin, Canon Busters, Black Lagoon, Blade-Anime, Basquash!, Yasuke, Carol & Tuesday, Neo Yokio, Castlevania, and others are among the finest anime featuring black protagonists of all time. When it comes to black representation, these anime are at the top of the list, and I strongly encourage everyone to watch them.
Despite the fact that anime has made significant progress in portraying black anime characters, racial notions and stereotypes remain deeply embedded in the depiction of these characters. This offers us an indication of how Japanese people feel about those who they believe to be outsiders, particularly those with darker complexion. Racial prejudice and ignorance are still major problems in Japanese society, and more effort has to be done to address them.
The anime universe is vast. Aside from anime featuring black characters, there are a range of genres of anime to choose from, including yuri anime, action anime movies, sad anime movies, horror anime, anime based on video games, and so on. I hope you enjoy viewing all of these anime and leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
